The Eye of the Storm

Be still, and know that I Am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.  Psalm 46:10

Peace be still . . .

But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with His head on a cushion. The disciples woke Him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t You care that we’re going to drown?” When Jesus woke up, He rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. Then He asked them, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

. . . and know that I Am God.

The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey Him!”  Mark 4:37-41

Dear Jesus,

This story is filled with deep meaning for me. How many times have I been caught in the storms of life, struggling to bail myself out without thinking to call on You for help? You can ask me the same questions because they apply. “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Apparently, Your disciples already had opportunity for their tiny faith to be tested and grown, but You said they had “no” faith, even after witnessing Your miracles.

Jesus, please lift me up during the treacherous storms of pain and suffering that continue to assail me. Please guide me to safety and then teach me more about trusting in You so that my faith may grow. You are the only one who speaks to nature and it obeys. You are the only one who I want to speak to my heart and have it obey.

And like Your disciples, I too stand in awe.
